Handhand Water Testing Meters
One of the easiest ways to test your koi ponds is to use a handheld digital water testing meter. These individual/multi meters can test pH, TDS, EC, ORP, Salt and pond temperature. Handheld pond testing meters don't require reagents which makes them ideal for carrying out a testing quickly and accurately.
pH Meters
All koi have an immune systems and will protect themselves when the water quality is excellent and the water quality is stable. Your pond or quarantine tank water should be tested regularly to insure the ideal water parameters and thus healthy koi.
Water pH can be thought of as a measure of its relative alkalinity or acidity. A pH reading of 7.0 is considered neutral, with readings higher than 7.0 (up to 14) being alkaline, and readings lower than 7.0, acidic. Since the pH scale is logarithmic, a small change in pH means a drastic change in alkalinity or acidity. For example, a pH of 8 is 10 times more alkaline than a pH of 7, and a pH of 9 is 100 times more alkaline than a pH of 7.
The ideal pH for Koi is 7.5, though most koi can thrive at a stable pH level between 6.8-8.2 - as long as the pH stays consistent!
You can test the pH in your water by using the following equipment; a Tetra Ph Test kit, although these are not 100% accurate. Ditigal pH Meters such as the Hanna Waterproof pH & Temperature Tester (HI 98127) produce accurate readings with an accuraucy of 0.01. other Meters such as Hanna Waterproof pH/Conductivity/TDS/Temp Tester (HI 98130) can also test Ec & TDS which is very usefull for Koi and Aqaurium fish keepers.
